Daily Recap:
Unfortunately, this year’s Global Big Day turned out to be a bit of a letdown here in New Hampshire, thanks to the weather. As you know, it’s been raining for the last week—some days just a mist, others a full-on downpour. And today, of course, decided to be a cold, steady rain.
It finally stopped around 3 p.m. and the sun came out, so I rushed to the Town Forest for a short visit before other plans pulled me away.
Despite the limited time, the forest was incredibly active—and I really wish I could’ve stayed longer. In just 31 minutes, I tallied 36 species, including 9 species of warblers. Birds were singing non-stop, and it felt like they were just as happy as I was to see the sun again.
I highlighted Black-capped Chickadee today after watching a group of seven together in a single tree! I couldn’t tell if they were establishing territory, courting, or just having a chaotic moment, but they were moving and calling non-stop.
Merlin’s Bird of the Day was Marsh Wren—a species I don’t think I’ve ever had at the Town Forest. With only 30 minutes to search, it was going to be a challenge regardless.
All in all, I’m just excited that the sun is finally back. With a few warm days ahead, I have a feeling the Town Forest will come alive again, just like it did at the start of the month.
