Daily Recap:
Arriving at a cloudy Town Forest after the morning rain, I was pleasantly surprised by how active it was.
A Blue-winged Warbler singing at my arrival is always a good start—but what made it more exciting was spotting a pair farther down the trail—my first ever Blue-winged pair at the Town Forest.
Speaking of pairs, I also had two Yellow Warblers together near the end of the trail, which is why I highlighted them as well. Two warbler pairs in one walk—both firsts for the year at the Town Forest!
Over the past week, I’ve been hearing Scarlet Tanagers singing from the treetops, but today was the first time I heard one calling from deep in the woods.
In addition to the birds, I also came across some spring butterflies and pollinators—Spring Azures, Clouded Sulphurs, and a Western Honey Bee.
All in all, a solid 43 species on the day, with 9 warbler species. I’m still missing Blackburnian and Bay-breasted Warblers this year—two staples of spring migration. Once I see them, I’ll have checked off all the common warblers that pass through New Hampshire.
Outside of warblers, I’m also still hoping to pick up a few other usual spring migrants: Indigo Bunting, Eastern Wood-Pewee, and Warbling Vireo.
That’s my new goal—to find every one of them at the Town Forest by the end of the month.
