Daily Recap:
Finally, a warm and comfortable walk through the Town Forest today after such a cold and gloomy week. Though there wasn’t much singing, the birds were still pretty active. Most of the usual suspects were around, with a couple of great highlights.
I tallied a total of 9 American Redstarts throughout the trail today, and every single one was either a female or an immature male. Not a single adult male in the bunch!
As I made my way back toward the car around sunset, I paused in the powerline cut to watch and listen for any Nighthawks. Sure enough, five Common Nighthawks soared gracefully above the lines and then out over the pond. It’s always a treat to watch them hover in their signature V-shape before switching to those long, fluid wingbeats. And seeing that bold white wing patch flash in the evening light never gets old.
I couldn’t ask for more from tonight’s walk—comfortable weather, active birds, and an unforgettable Nighthawk sighting. With a beautiful stretch of weather ahead for the final week of the challenge, I’m excited to see what else might show up!
